Line Transversals to Translates of Unit Discs
Let F be a family of convex figures in the plane. We say that F has property T if there exist a line intersecting every member of F . Also, we say that the family F has property T (k) if every k−membered subfamily of F has property T . In this talk we will give some results concerning families of translates of the unit disc which have property T (3) or T (4).

Given t families, each family consisting of s finite sets, we show that if the families “separate points" in a natural way, and if the union of all the sets in all the families contains more than (s+1)t st 1 1 elements, then a common transversal of the t families exists. In case each family is a covering family, the bound is st st 1. Both of these bounds are best possible. This work extends rec...

Suppose we are gIven a set S of n (possibly intersecting) simple objects in the plane, such that for every pair of objects in S, the intersection of the boundaries of these two objects has at most a connected components. The integer a is independent of n, Le. a.=O (1). \Ve consider the problem of detennining whether there exists a straight line that goes through every object in S. We give an 0 ...
متن کاملPartial proof of Graham Higman's conjecture related to coset diagrams
Graham Higman has defined coset diagrams for PSL(2,ℤ). These diagrams are composed of fragments, and the fragments are further composed of two or more circuits. Q. Mushtaq has proved in 1983 that existence of a certain fragment γ of a coset diagram in a coset diagram is a polynomial f in ℤ[z]. Higman has conjectured that, the polynomials related to the fragments are monic and for a fixed degree...
متن کاملProof for a Conjecture on General Means
We give a proof for a conjecture suggested by Olivier de La Grandville and Robert M. Solow, which says that the general mean of two positive numbers, as a function of its order, has one and only one inflection point.
